Feb. 9, 1932 – April 17, 2017

Betty J. Barney (Mach) was born Feb. 9, 1932 in Burwell, Nebraska. The daughter of Edward Mach and Rosie Marie Mach, Betty was raised on a farm where she learned hard-working values. Betty moved to California in the 1950s, living in the Hollywood area where she met and later wed Michael J. Barney.

Betty moved to Glendale in 1960 where she became the mother of two children. Betty lived a very simple life for 57 years at her Glendale home. Betty could often be seen walking through the Montrose shopping park and visiting neighborhood friends, but was most happy and proud working in her yard and garden.

Betty passed on April 17 peacefully at her home.

Betty is survived by son Robert Barney of Montrose; daughter Susan Barney, of Simi Valley; brother Leo Mach (Nancy) of Omaha, Nebraska; sister Darlene Teetor of Lexington, Nebraska; sister Leona Cowie (Dennis) of Conroe, Texas; and a very special caregiver and best friend Lory Santiago.

1927 – 2017

Longtime foothills resident Betty E. Arnds passed away on April 30 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by Harold Arnds Sr., her husband of 62 happy years, who passed away in 2008. Her oldest son, Harold Walton Arnds Jr. (Hal) died in 1965, followed by Thomas Christopher Arnds (Tom) in 1983 and grandson Justin Turner in 2008. She is survived by the four remaining of her six children and their spouses: Susan “Sunny” Hoover (Park); David Arnds (Jana); Debbie Yaeger (Bill); Donna Arnds. Betty is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Jimmie Turner, Casie Meade, David and Kristi Arnds, Michael, Mandy and Joey Yaeger, and James and Daniel Morrow, along with eight great-grandchildren (with one on the way!). She will be missed tremendously.

Born in Ohiowa, Nebraska in 1927, she was adopted at the age of 3 by Harry and Grace Kershner, a childless couple. They brought her to Los Angeles in the early 1930s where she was given dance lessons, including tap and ballet. But her real passion was for art, and she created hundreds of drawings including formal portraits of people, Norman Rockwell-type scenes that captured the spirit and fun of those being depicted. Late in her life, she discovered watercolor, and then excelled at painting flowers and scenes. There are many families in the foothills area with pieces created by Betty, which she often gave without charging because she loved drawing so much, and she was a giving soul.

Betty would probably be best described by her strong faith in Christ, which sustained her family through many difficulties over the years. Betty served at La Crescenta First Baptist Church for many years, using her talents in art to teach children (including her grandchildren!) about the Good News of the Gospel.

Services will take place this Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at Community Life Church (formerly known as First Baptist Church of La Crescenta), located at 4441 La Crescenta Ave., La Crescenta. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn, Glendale.

The family requests anyone with artwork created by Betty to kindly consider sending a photo of it, along with your contact information, to bettye.arndsarttribute@gmail.com for a possible future showing of her work.

The Campbell Center (TCC) Announces Passing of Founder Phyllis Campbell

Mrs. Phyllis Campbell, co-founder of The Campbell Center, died in the afternoon of July 25. Phyllis had been at Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital for the previous week where her heart specialist was caring for her. Her death ends a period of health challenges stretching over the past several years, the most recent included surgery in May.

The Campbell family, a long-time institution in Glendale, has played a vital role in the developmental disabilities arena, starting with the founding of The Campbell Center in 1954, which was inspired by their daughter Janice who was born with Down’s syndrome. The agency’s mission then was to provide children with developmental disabilities the opportunity for education, which was not available within the Glendale Unified School District at that time. Phyllis’ passionate advocacy for such an opportunity in the school system was instrumental in the establishment of special needs education at GUSD.

Throughout the years, the organization evolved in its mission to serve adults with developmental disabilities through work choices, residential services and community integration programs. Collectively, these programs and services help close to 150 clients on a daily basis.

“For The Campbell Center, Phyllis was a visionary and a forward-thinker. To me personally, she was a legend, someone I looked up to,” said Sandy Moreno, TCC chief executive officer. “She was always an avid supporter of growth, progress and empowerment when it came to our clients. Were it not for Phyllis, we would have never had the privilege nor the opportunity to make a positive difference for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I will always be grateful for all she did.”

At the organization’s 60th anniversary gala in September 2014, Phyllis summed up her pride in the agency’s leadership.

“I had a vision when I founded the organization, but I never envisioned that it would grow to the scope that it has throughout the ensuing decades,” she said.

A native Glendalian, Phyllis was a USC graduate with a BS degree in business administration. It was at USC that she met her future husband, Jerry. They married in 1947 and started their family with the birth of their daughter Janice Elaine in 1950, followed by the birth of their son Jerry in 1953. It is in honor of Janice’s legacy, the inspiration for launching The Campbell Center, that the organization rebranded from GAR Services to The Campbell Center in 2014. Janice passed on in January 2016.

Plans for memorial services have not been finalized.

Phyllis is survived by her husband Jerry, a Korean War era naval officer, and son Jerry Jr. The family has specifically requested that donations be made in Phyllis’s memory to The Campbell Center, 6512 San Fernando Road, Glendale, California 91201.

Aug. 7, 1940 – Aug. 9, 2017

Lynne Kress (Sciacqua) Baumheckel, a longtime resident of Montrose, suddenly passed away on Aug. 9 with her husband, son and granddaughter by her side.

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Aug. 7, 1940, Lynne and her family relocated to Southern California when she was 3. She moved to Montrose in 1972.

A graduate of Dorsey High School, Lynne always cherished her social circle from that era, often serving on the decorating committee for their reunions. She graduated from Woodbury College with a major in interior design, which was her passion. She considered motherhood a privilege, pouring her heart and soul into making her house a loving home.

While writing to her grandchildren, Lynne said, “Christmas means many different things, but I would like it to teach you how to love family and friends, enjoy each other for who that person is, and forgive those who have hurt you in some way.” This reflects her unbiased love for all. Lynne planned for Christmas all year long, with a sprinkling of Christmas in the décor of every room in her house.

Many remember Lynne’s heart for taking in strays, be they animals or people.

She is survived by her husband Bob; sons Nathan (Natashia), and Tod (Cherryl); stepchildren Lloyd (Panida), Linda (Bob), Karl (Cheryl), Ron (Michele), Charlene (Ryan); 17 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at Community Life Church (FBCLC), 4441 La Crescenta Ave. Donations may be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or FBCLC Youth Fund in lieu of flowers.
