Oct. 3, 1945 – Feb. 28, 2021

Harvey Fernandez passed away peacefully in his home in Montrose on the morning of Feb. 28 after his long struggle with leukemia, which he fought bravely. He was surrounded by his family members and caregiver.

He is survived by his devoted wife of over 40 years, Carmen, and his two siblings, Yvonne and Ed.
Harvey was born on Oct. 3, 1945 in a small town in Bangladesh to Portuguese parents. He came to America in 1971 and was a resident of Glendale and Montrose for the past 50 years. He attended Holy Redeemer Church ever since he lived here. He was a devoted son to both his parents and took care of them until they passed away. He had no children of his own but viewed his nephew Paul and his niece Crystal as his own, and he was always there when they needed him.

He is remembered by his family and friends for being a most loyal fan of Elvis Presley, and was a collector of Elvis memorabilia. He was also the family photographer, always showing up at all family gatherings with at least two or three cameras and a tripod. He will always be remembered as being the hardest worker in the family, too.

Rest in peace, our dear Harvey.

Eva Kirby
March 19, 2021

After one-hundred years of having lived an extraordinary life, Eva Kirby, a brilliant educator and visionary, passed away peacefully on March 19, just two days after her 100th birthday celebration. She was preceded in death by William Paul Kirby, her beloved husband of 45 years, a dedicated educator and elementary school principal in Los Angeles Unified School District, and her brother, Dr. David Adkisson, and his wife Beverly.

After graduating from UCLA, Mrs. Kirby began her career serving the students of LAUSD as a science teacher at Dorsey High School while a training teacher at USC and a night school counselor at Huntington Park High School. She was also assistant principal of Van Nuys and William Howard Taft high schools, and principal of Verdugo Hills High School, Millikan Junior High School, and North Hollywood High School from which she retired in 1979 after 32 years in education. Throughout all of her accomplishments, perhaps her most important was the training of young men and women to become effective school administrators and at the time of her retirement these administrators stood to show their appreciation for her leadership and guidance.

Mrs. Kirby served the District on numerous committees, was active in professional organizations, and served two terms as president of the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce while administering the North Hollywood satellite campus of California Lutheran College and teaching graduate courses in education.

Mrs. Kirby and her husband Bill traveled the world on vacations and sabbaticals and after retirement lived an active life in Olympia, Washington. Her activities included teaching a Bible study for legislators on the Capitol campus, and she had a daily radio program leading the county in prayer for our nation. She also worked in jail ministry and gave seminars for the North West Christian Education Conference.

Her brother and his wife Beverly later urged her to move with them to Covenant Village in Turlock, California where she taught Bible studies to large groups and trained others to continue her work. She was chosen Woman of the Year for her teaching and mentoring. She has had many honors bestowed on her during her life’s journey, but considered her greatest honor to be a bearer of the name “Christian” and to serve her Lord.

In loving memory of Billy Edward Frame July 4, 1943 – March 25, 2021. He passed away on March 25 at Glendale Memorial Hospital due to an illness of cancer in his liver. He passed peacefully.

The flowers recede but leaves behind bright.

The sun goes down but gently warmth still lingers on the land.

The music stops and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains…

For every joy that passes something beautiful remains.

May be gone but never forgotten; Billy, you always brought a smile that warmed our hearts.

Feb. 25, 1942 – Jan. 27, 2021

Much beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend, Renny Ray Maddox passed away Jan. 27 at his home in Burbank with his loving wife of 52 years, Lynn, by his side. He leaves behind brothers Mark (Priscilla) and Kent (Glenda); children Jill (John) and Blake (Lisa); grandchildren Lane, Brody and Grace; nephew Trey (Rhea); great-nephews Minor and Maverick; great-niece Nova and many, many good friends.

Renny was born on Feb. 25, 1942 in Illinois while his father was deployed on a Navy vessel. After graduating from Cal State, Long Beach with a degree in accounting, Renny would follow his father’s example and also join the services. It was when he was Army photographer at Fort Knox, Kentucky that Renny met Lynn at the local Jewish community center. They were married on a hot August night in Louisville, Kentucky in 1968. After Renny was discharged from the Army, they initially moved to Glendale where he began his career as an accountant and later to Burbank, where they raised their family.

A huge Cincinnati Reds fan, Renny truly enjoyed taking a recent trip with his brothers, Mark and Kent, to the All Star Game in Cincinnati. He also loved Sherlock Holmes mysteries, birding with Lynn, and volunteering. Renny made many friends while serving on the board of Temple Sinai in Glendale and also at the Getty Center, where he could be found every Tuesday morning, guiding patrons to specific works of art.

Renny was a gentle soul, the kind of person who everyone liked. He was generous with his time and never missed a family or school event. A doting grandfather, he attended all of Lane’s figure skating and choral performances, and constantly engaged in “Star Wars” action figure battles with Brody as he was growing up. Although daughter Jill lives on the East Coast, Renny forged a strong bond with his granddaughter Grace, whom he referred to as his “cupcake.”

Renny will be truly missed.

Barbara Joan Boucher, nèe Williams
Sept. 29, 1944 – May 22, 2021

Barbara was born in New York City in 1944 to parents Donald and Leone Williams. She spent her early life around Syracuse, New York before moving to Daytona Beach, Florida. In her teens, she and her family moved to the Glendale area of Southern California where she would spend the rest of her life.

Well known for her ability to make friends with anyone she met, and having a near perfect memory, Barbara, or “Bobbi” as she liked to be called, had little trouble excelling at whatever path she placed herself on. Be it babysitting, working at a bank, or as a section secretary at JPL in the ’70s, she was well liked by everyone she came into contact with.

A dedicated wife and mother, she would spend many years volunteering for her local church or at the schools her children attended, oftentimes stepping in for the teacher should the need arise, picking up skills she would later use when homeschooling her youngest child.

Barbara passed away on May 22 shortly before 11 p.m. at Verdugo Hills Hospital after a brief battle with an extremely aggressive form of leukemia.

Adeline (Peg) Lucy Childers-McClish
April 2, 1919 – May 14, 2021

Adeline (Peg) Lucy McClish passed peacefully at Windsor Home in Glendale on May 14. She was 102. There is no formal service set for her at this time.

Adeline was born on the outskirts of Douglas, Arizona and showed her talents and spirit early in life, beginning with the violin. While denied the opportunity to attend college, she was nonetheless salutatorian of her senior class, concert mistress of the high school orchestra, and sang recitals with a beautiful lyric soprano voice, while maintaining her treasured violin studies. She sang in and directed the choir at Grace United Methodist Church in Douglas. She also was in the marching band playing clarinet, and cruised by the Gadsen Hotel in her 1930 Model T, hand-painted her favorite green.

Adeline met future husband Felix at a badminton party in 1939; he, a dashing manager trainee for SH Kress, transferred to Douglas while she worked in town. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day and married on June 1, 1940. Within a year they were transferred to the Southern California area.

After surviving WWII they started their family and settled in the Glendale annexed part of La Crescenta. Felix was manager on Brand Boulevard at SH Kress and The Toy House. Adeline always continued her singing while being a full-time mom and part-time accounts manager. “Peg” and “Mac” sang at Glendale First Baptist for over 30 years. Their two children, Susan and Michael, also became professional singers.

Family night was usually tacos, burritos and tostadas at Ernie Jr.’s Taco House.

Life was never dull around Peg. She taught Vacation Bible School, and cooked tacos for the youth groups at Glendale First Baptist Church. She once peacefully disarmed a suicidal man in front of the family house.

Peg eventually started her own accounting services business. One of her clients was the Family Law Firm Grayson, Maxwell, and Sugarman, and Barbara Maxwell became a very good friend in her final years.

Peg and Mac were married over 70 years until his passing in 2011 at 93. She then moved into Windsor Home in Glendale where she sang every hymn by heart, and wowed them with “The Lord’s Prayer.” Mind you, at 100 she was still singing.

Adeline and Felix helped their two children complete their college degrees and teaching credentials, and supported all their efforts their entire life.

Adeline is survived by her daughter Susan M. McClish-Frantz of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and her son, Michael D. McClish of Los Angeles.

Both Adeline and Felix are interred at Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood. Those wishing to honor her memory can make a donation to Disabled Veterans Charity (dav.org) “In Honor of Adeline L. McClish.” She would be very pleased because, when Mac was recuperating at a veteran’s hospital after WWII, she would run bases for the injured vets playing baseball who could hit, but couldn’t run.

May her unselfish spirit touch all of our lives, and her talents reach out to others through us.

Johannes “Joe” Steur left us on June 18, 2021. He was born in Amsterdam, Holland. In 1956, he emigrated with his family to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1960, the family moved to Glendale.

Joe graduated from Herbert Hoover High in 1965. Joe was an excellent hairstylist. He started his hair salon, “Steur Salon for Hair,” on Brand Boulevard in Glendale. The salon moved to Ocean View Boulevard in Montrose in 1990. The love of his life was Susan Lehman.

Joe and Susan were married on Feb. 14, 1987, made their home in La Cañada, and raised their daughter Amy Steur Fonder.

Joe’s life was centered on his family and friends. He worked with his brother Peter Jr., his father Peter Sr., and his wife Susan. He performed at hair shows with his brother Robert and nephew Eric. He was close to his mother Cory and mother-in-law Julie. He had a particularly close bond with his nephews Chad and Peter III.

Joe and Susan had many wonderful clients who they also counted as friends. If you ever spent any time with Joe and Susan, they often spoke fondly of their friends David and Stephanie Banta, Jane Leggett, and Lucio and Rosa.

Joe is survived by his spouse Susan, his brothers Robert and Peter Jr., his daughter Amy Steur Fonder, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Joe loved life. He was a doer. His energy was infectious and his outlook on life positive. He was generous to a fault. If you needed anything, Joe had your back. He was always thinking of others, and making those in his life feel special. In truth, Joe was the special one.

There is a sign at their beach house that reads, “If you’re lucky enough to be at the beach, you’re lucky enough.” If you were lucky enough to have Joe in your life, you were truly blessed. He will be missed.
