Nov. 9, 1950-Sept. 29, 2024

Bonnie passed away on Sept. 29 surrounded by her loving family.

Bonnie was born on Nov. 9, 1950 to Lee and LaVonne Broadway and was proud to spend her entire life in the Crescenta Valley. She attended local schools and graduated from CVHS in 1968. She married William (Bill) Meade (also from CV) and they had two children (Dawn and Dennis, who also graduated from CVHS).

Bonnie was raised in faith and was a lifelong member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church where she was a choir member, served on the chancel guild and for many years was the finance secretary.

She was a longtime volunteer of Girl and Boy Scouts, supporting at the troop and council levels. Bonnie supported the schools her children attended helping with the PTA, supervising as a noon duty aide and organizing many fundraisers. She worked at Verdugo Hills Bowl and then at the Glendale Area Schools Federal Credit Union for over 25 years helping many people with various loan matters.

Bonnie liked attending family reunions, especially when they were in South Dakota where she could turn the vacation into a road trip and reconnect with old friends and see the sights. She enjoyed visiting with her many neighbors and friends and, of course, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Dodgers. She loved growing her cherished roses of all colors at every house she lived in and was often seen in Montrose eating at her favorite restaurant – Joselito’s.

She is survived by her daughter Dawn Meade Keeling and husband Bob; son Dennis Meade; sister Nadine Moore; nephew Aaron Moore and wife Cassandra; and great niece Brynley Rae along with an extensive extended family of first, second and third cousins.

A celebration of life will be held on her birthday, Nov. 9, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 2723 Orange Ave. in La Crescenta.

Bonnie will be missed but is now at peace and out of pain.

Feb. 20, 1947 – Oct. 17, 2024

David Francis Belden, 77, passed away on Oct. 17 in Glendale. His battles in recent years with serious medical issues gave him the chance to show his courage in facing life’s challenges to the very end with hope and a smile. As a devout Christian, David passed with the peace of knowing that he would be going to his heavenly home.

Born to William and Patricia Belden on Feb. 20, 1947, David grew up attending Sunny Valley School House and Chippewa Falls Senior High School in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

David graduated from the West Point United States Military Academy and dedicated five years of his life to the United States Army, achieving the rank of captain. He was also a Vietnam veteran.

Following his military service, David embarked on a distinguished career as a radiation safety officer and health physicist – a field in which he worked for over 30 years.

One of his greatest career achievements was being the owner and president of Belden Engineering, Inc., where he was able to use his accumulation of knowledge and experience to help businesses – both in the United States and internationally –advance in areas of medicine as well as industrial applications.

Known for his intelligent wit and sense of humor, David was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was always generous with his time and affection. He enjoyed reading, playing computer games and spending quality time with his family.

Although in his later years David was not able to actively attend church, he loved the Lord and had a list of Scriptures he read daily. One of his favorites is from Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” David exemplified this every day of his life.

David is survived by his wife and love of his life for 55 years Kathy Belden; his children Wendy Belden, Daryn Belden, Alyssa (Bryan) Ruiz, and Aimee Belden; his grandchildren Justin and Jill Myrant, Nolan and Nathaniel Mendoza, Bennett, Brandon, and Abigail Ruiz; and his siblings, William Huse, Camie Teerink, Lanette Belden, Linda Wirth and Sandra Gibson. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Sherlyn Belden, Teresa Oliver and Vicky Huse.

David will be honored in a memorial service to be held at Bloomer Baptist Church, 2620 Duncan Road in Bloomer, Wisconsin, on Nov. 30 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David’s memory to the West Point Association of Graduates or Vietnam Veterans of America.

Anthony Gerardus Verkouteren

March 29, 1948 – Nov. 2, 2024

Anthony Gerardus Verkouteren, 76, of Altadena passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 2. He was known to some as Tony or Gerry but to those closest to him he was Dad, Uncle or Opa.

Anthony was born on March 29, 1948 in Surabaya, Indonesia to Henri and Cecilia Verkouteren. The family moved to the Netherlands in the early 1950s then to the United States soon after, sponsored by a family belonging to St. James the Less Catholic Church in La Crescenta. They settled into a home close to the parish.

While growing up, Anthony and his younger brother Michael would walk to the church early Sunday mornings to altar serve at the first Mass.

In 1963, Anthony graduated from St. James Elementary and started high school at Pater Noster in Los Angeles. He transferred to Crescenta Valley High School and graduated with the Class of 1967. He joined the USMC and served for two years as a wireman for the 3rd Marine Division, which was stationed at Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam. He continued his military service back home in the National Guard until 1972.

Using his wireman experience, he obtained a job with the Glendale Public Works Dept. repairing telephone lines; after sustaining a work injury, he completed his education at Citrus College and transferred to the Building Inspection division. He also met the love of his life, Lilia, around this time and purchased his first home in Pasadena, upgrading a decade later to their current home in Altadena.

Although work and fatherhood kept him busy, Anthony still made time to coach and volunteer for AYSO Region 88. He even managed to start a business, Affordable Property Inspection, and helped many potential homeowners. Anthony also briefly worked part-time at OSH near his childhood neighborhood.

Upon retiring from the City of Glendale after 30 years of service, to stay active he worked as a school bus driver part-time for children with special needs.

Anthony is survived by siblings Eleonore Brown and Michael Verkouteren. He leaves behind wife Lilia; son Carlos (Mary Ann) Novoa; daughter Sonia (John) Reading; son Casey Verkouteren; and grandchildren Anthony and Marc Novoa, and Kylie and Ava Reading.

A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, Nov.  26 at 10 a.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 4651 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Military burial and interment will be at 1 p.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

Oct. 21, 2024

Charles F. “Tye” Veden passed at 93 on Oct 21. He was a longtime resident and civic activist in Glendale. Tye started in business selling insurance. He later bought a local agency from Goodwin Knight and owned Knight Insurance Agency with his brother Noel until Tye’s first retirement. Tye (no one knows the origin of the nickname) was long associated with the Boy Scouts of America. As a Scout, he achieved the rank of Eagle. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow, which is a national Brotherhood of Scout Honor Campers. As an adult, he became involved in Scouting leadership and became president of the Verdugo Hills Council, BSA. Scouting’s highest honor, the Silver Beaver, was bestowed by the BSA. He was also named to the Verdugo Hills Council Hall of Fame.

As a business owner, he became involved in the Glendale Junior Chamber of Commerce in the days when the JCs sponsored the Days of the Verdugos, a local parade and fundraising effort, leading to community projects of various kinds. He became president of the JCs and later received the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. Tye was also named the Junior Chamber Man of the Year. The Man of the Year award was also bestowed by the Glendale Chamber of Commerce after serving as the Chamber president.

Tye became a member of the Rotary Club of Glendale and became president of that organization in 1988-89. Glendale Rotary, along with the rest of the Rotary world, began the effort to eradicate polio globally during his year as president. Many projects, both locally and globally, were funded and completed during Tye’s time as a Rotarian. Tye also committed funds to the Rotary Foundation, achieving the level of Paul Harris – times five.

Tye graduated from Glendale College in 1950 before moving on to UCLA. But Glendale College remained a part of his life. Tye was instrumental in the innovation of the El Vaquero Racquet Club run by the Glendale College Foundation. Fees from the club have raised over $140,000 for the college foundation.

In 1995 Tye was named chair of the Planned Giving Committee. Commitments to date exceed $500,000. Another $250,000 was raised via the Capital Campaign Endowment, the annual business luncheon, the annual golf tournament and other college foundation projects. Over $100,000 has been donated to the Tye Veden Scholars Fund. Tye also was instrumental in starting the Glendale College Athletic Hall of Fame where former students were inducted who went on to do big things. One of the first inductees was GC alumni Andy Reid, current head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tye also was involved with the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Foundation and was an organizing member of the organization. He would become a trustee and later the president of the Foundation as well as an organizing member of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Civic Advisory Board. Along the way, Tye was a commissioner for the City of Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Services and a city planning commissioner. He was also the vice president of the Glendale Community Foundation.

Those who knew Tye would also know of his love of the mountains, namely the High Sierra. He made his first trip as a Scout at 16 and for the next 74 years never missed a trip. These were strenuous back country excursions involving horses, mules, backpacks and lots of miles in rough terrain. The map collection alone was very extensive and a measure of his interest in seeing some places that were almost impossible to get to.

Tye was an avid fisherman and he developed his personal style of fly fishing. He would rise early, wake his sons and get out on the water. In the evening, he would love to sit by the campfire with a glass of wine and tell stories of the day and past trips and then ask, “Where are we going next year?”

In the last few years, these trips were “car camping” but at least he was enjoying himself in a lawn chair overlooking a lake surrounded by mountain peaks.

Tye Veden was preceded in death by his parents Fred W. Veden and Louise T. Veden; his daughter Michele Veden Pearce. He is survived by his brother Noel; son David (Michaeline); and son Todd. Tye was also preceded in death by his best friend (and son David’s godfather) David Adams. He is survived by Isabel Adams.

In lieu of flowers, Tye’s family suggests contributions in his honor to Verdugo Hills Council, BSA, the Glendale College Fund, Rotary International Foundation or La Crescenta Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life, along with stories and sharing, will take place at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church, 2902 Montrose Ave., La Crescenta, on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. A post service reception will take place at the Church following.

March 9, 1963 – Nov. 15, 2024

Damian Willard Ryan, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away on Friday,

Nov. 15 with his wife and children by his side.

Damian, a lifetime La Crescenta resident, was born on March 9, 1963 to James W. Ryan and Suzanne Alys Ryan. The youngest of five sons, Damian graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1982 where he was known as the very good-looking guy with the polo shirts, signature blond hair and yellow 1970 El Camino. The life of the party and a friend to everyone, his classmates described him as the kindest, most genuine person of their class.

A man driven by an unmatched work ethic and desire to tackle the next project, So-Cal Heating and Air was Damian’s passion and purpose because he loved what he did … and he did it well. Beginning with servicing residential homes in the La Cañada area and an office out of his home, So-Cal expanded to 14 employees serving La Crescenta and the surrounding areas.

Damian loved a challenge and was always thinking of how to tackle the next one. Where some companies would say a project was impossible, Damian would find a way, having the skill and engineering ingenuity to create the perfect system for anyone. But more than his innovation for solving the unsolvable, So-Cal flourished because of the type of human being that Damian was. An individual of generosity and absolute integrity, customers knew he would do right by them. Because of his immense integrity, he was confident in his choices and intentions. He knew his core values. He knew what was right. And that was his guiding force in all he did, professionally and privately. A testament to the quality of Damian’s character, So-Cal never had to do any advertising as word-of-mouth from customers was more than sufficient. Customers included teachers of his alma mater to city permit officers.

He became best friends with his top competitors because it was just in his nature to be everyone’s friend. He wanted anyone that he interacted with to feel important and that they mattered to him.

However, beyond any work project or friendship, Damian’s penultimate project was his family. He met his wife and love of his life Rachel Ryan in 1996. And for better or worse, he never left her alone after that. He built their family home in 2001. And shortly thereafter in 2002 he experienced what he called the best day of his life when they found out they were pregnant with their first child, Dana Lee. He could not wait to have another and their son Richie soon followed. Damian, the fun dad, often said that he could not be more proud of his children and that his most joyous moments were watching them on the soccer field or listening to them sing

or play the piano. He felt it was his responsibility to always provide for them and accordingly made sure they had every resource they needed to grasp every opportunity before them.

This last week, as his body began to let go but his mind held on, he was able to spend a few precious days with his family by his side. Richie took his father for one last ride in his beloved El Camino. Dana sang one last song for him. On Friday, Nov. 15 at 5:55 a.m. all three held onto him as his spirit went home.

His funeral service will be Friday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer

Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. The burial will follow directly after at Forest Lawn of Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Ave.

Damian would like it duly noted that he had to wait 10 days for his burial permit.

Even in death, those city permit guys still hold up the project.

Jim was born in Glendale on Dec. 1, 1958 where he continued to live throughout his life.  He attended Crescenta Valley High School, graduated in 1976, and received his degree in business from Cal State LA. He spent over 30 years working at Wedbush Securities where he rose from an order desk clerk in the trading room to executive vice president. He played a pivotal role in the success of the company, guiding the firm into the digital age with his innovation, programming and implementation of Broker Insight, elevating Wedbush to become a leader in financial services. Jim spent all of his childhood summers fishing on the Rogue River in Oregon with his parents. He was a talented water skier and enjoyed spending time on the lake in his younger years.  He was a very skilled woodworker building his own house and many of the cabinets and furniture for it. May 11, 1949 – Dec. 7, 2024

Dennis M. Gurka, 75, beloved husband, father, Pa and friend, passed away peacefully on Dec. 7 at his home in La Crescenta surrounded by family after a short but brave battle with cancer.

Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on May 11, 1949, Dennis moved to Pasadena with his family when he was 10 years old and quickly embraced the Southern California lifestyle. He attended Blair High School where he played football and it was during those years that he met the love of his life Judy.

Before getting married, Dennis went on to proudly serve our country as an infantryman during Vietnam, something he was extremely proud of. After the war, Dennis and Judy married in La Crescenta and had two beautiful daughters, Allison and Jennifer, who he cherished.

Dennis spent over 40 years in various sales leadership and marketing roles as an executive, mentor and friend to so many. The outpouring from business friends and colleagues has been a testament to the impact he had on so many, both personally and professionally.

Dennis loved to travel with his wife and daughters, taking countless trips all over the U.S. exploring the rich history, beautiful cities and gorgeous beaches that make up the country he loved and fought to protect. He loved to be in the water and had a real soft spot for Hawaii (where he was once stationed) and the California desert – Palm Springs and La Quinta, where so many beautiful memories were made – with his family and four grandchildren Lyla, Ben, Kate and Evan, who he adored.

Some of his happiest moments were time spent with his grandkids in the pool, working on fun projects together or attending their sporting events. Dennis was proud to have volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club for many years. Dennis also cherished his friendships, whether it was his war buddies, work friends or people he met in his daily life. He hosted an annual reunion of friends from high school at his home in La Quinta. Getting to share those endless stories and laughs together was something Dennis always felt was truly a gift.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife Judy, and daughters/sons-in-law Allison and Rich Grochola, and Jennifer and Will Selva. Dennis loved his family and we loved him. The beautiful memories we have with him will carry on forever. Funeral Mass will be held at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 4651 Dunsmore Ave. in Glendale/La Crescenta on Friday, Dec 13 at 11 a.m.

Patricia “Patty” Marie Smith

Nov. 10, 1948 – Oct. 11, 2024

Patricia “Patty” Marie Smith (née Olsen), 75, joined all the saints in heaven on Oct. 11. She peacefully passed away in the arms of her beloved husband after a day surrounded by family and friends.

Patty was born on Nov. 10, 1948 in Los Angeles, the third child and first daughter of the late Kenneth “Ken” Olsen and Dorothy “Dickie” Olsen. After graduating from high school in 1966 from Immaculate Heart in Los Angeles, she went on to study at USC in the footsteps of many of her relatives. It was while at school Patty fell in love and married Bob Miller in 1969. God blessed her quickly with a pregnancy but tragically Bob was taken from her only months later.

The Holy Spirit prevailed and introduced Patty to Michael “Mike” Smith through their parents who were friends. In pure Hollywood fashion, their “meet-cute” was a Valentine’s Day dinner date. Thus began a long and beautiful love story spanning more than 53 years that saw their family grow to include six children and 18 grandchildren.

Patty was not content to simply be the erstwhile homemaker and invented the term “domestic engineer.” In between raising the six children she birthed in nine years (and who gave her a good run for her money), she epitomized the Jesuit credo of being a woman for others through her humble and dedicated work at the Good Shepherd Shelter, ministering to female inmates in county jail, assisting the Homeboy and Homegirl Industries, taking her dog Quincy to visit the children at CHLA and serving on several school boards including Verbum Dei. She was also heavily involved in her La Cañada and St. Bede’s parish communities. All who knew Patty knew her to be someone who had a compassionate heart and an action mindset. She would do anything for anyone in need – and get it done yesterday.

Patty was indeed a force to be reckoned with and, as one of her sons-in-law coined, was always “direct with God’s love.” This served as a great example to her family, especially her daughters and granddaughters, that there is nothing wrong and everything right with being a strong woman.

Patty also had a soft side and was known for her fun spirit, love of travel, great parties, big smile and vivacious laugh. She leaves a cadre of family and close friends that could fill hours (if not days) with fun stories about her, her escapades and her carpe diem spirit.

Patty’s mind was as big as her heart and she was extremely well read. While her early marriage interrupted her undergraduate studies at USC, later in life she returned to school and graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 1999 with a degree in theological studies. She could hold court with the best and brightest whether they be professors at LMU, priests, bishops, cardinals, authors of renowned books or any subject matter expert really.

Patty’s parents, Ken and Dickie, and elder brother Michael greeted her in heaven. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 53 years Michael, and their children: Peter (Christine), Kathleen (Henry), Meghan (Kyle), Tommy (Shannon), Will (Krista) and Carolyn (Kevin). Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy of 18 grandchildren: PJ, McKenna, Charlie, Abby, Luke, Mia, Cade, Micah, Clare, Grace, Reilly, Maggie, Cassidy, Clayton, Tyson, Conor, Madeline and Ryan. She is also survived by her beloved siblings Chris, Paul, Ken, Steve and Jodi. And, last but not least, she will be greatly missed by her ever faithful and loving dog Quincy.

Funeral services were held at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church on Oct. 19 and she is interned at the Cathedral of Our Lady Queen of Angels.

In lieu of flowers, Patty’s family kindly asks for consideration in making a donation to one of her beloved charities: Dolores Mission School, St. Francis High School or St. Bede Anew Campaign.

Be not afraid

I go before you always

Come follow me

And I will give you rest.”

Reverend Dr. Beverly Craig

April 1, 1942 – Nov. 7, 2024

Reverend Dr. Beverly Craig made a peaceful transition from this world into eternity on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. She was surrounded in love with her family members and friends by her side.

Rev. Bev, as she was lovingly referred to by all who knew her, was the oldest of nine children. She was born on April 1, 1942 to Leo E. and Claribel Muhlbach in Ravenna, Nebraska. She attended East Ward Elementary and Ravenna Junior and Senior High School, graduating in 1960. Soon after her high school graduation, Rev. Bev moved to California where she lived with her grandparents, George and Winifred Johnson, while she attended college.

During her college years, Rev. Bev met and married James Sauers. They had two children, Tamara Lynette and George Geoffrey. This marriage was dissolved in 1983. She was briefly married to Donald Craig from 1991 to 1996.

Rev. Bev answered her call to the ministry by joining Rev. Bill Schirmer at the La Crescenta Center for Spiritual Living after she graduated from the Ernest Holmes College in Huntington Beach in 1993. At the conclusion of the interview, Rev. Schirmer told Beverly, “You’re just the minister I’ve been praying for.” Rev. Bev also felt her prayers had been answered and accepted the position on the spot, serving in the capacity of assistant minister for eight years until Rev. Schrimer’s passing. Rev. Bev was unanimously voted into the position of senior minister in 2001 and served in this position until May 2024 when she felt it was in the best interest of the La Crescenta Center and its congregants that she retire due to a lengthy illness. This was a difficult decision for Rev. Bev as she loved her spiritual home and the congregants; but in her own words, she was ready to “pass the baton” to someone else who would fill her multiple positions and “grow the church,” always putting the needs of others before herself.

One of Rev. Bev’s proudest moments was when she received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in November 2019. This was an honor bestowed to her by the Centers for Spiritual Living organization (CSL), which very few ministers receive. Her doctorate was awarded in recognition of her many years of participation with the Centers for Spiritual Living organization (CSL), for her service and commitment to her community and for the years of participation and advancement of Religious Science practices. It was a rare honor for which she was most grateful and appreciative.

Rev. Bev was passionately and actively involved in many community organizations. She held the positions of FEMA chaplain, LA County Sheriff’s chaplain, chairperson of the Sheriff’s Clergy Council, YMCA chaplain, Community Emergency Response Team minister, member of the Strategic Partners/Drug & Alcohol Coalition, Glendale Religious Leaders Association, director of the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce, and director of the Crescenta Valley Town Council. These were not just titles; Rev. Bev was active – daily, weekly or monthly – in every one of these organizations.

In addition to the organizations referenced above, Rev. Bev’s contributions to the Center for Spiritual Living organization Youth Centers were indispensable from 1995 to 2005. As the manager of Youth Ministries, she was responsible for the development and implementation of the United Youth Program curriculum. She trained ministers throughout the U.S. in the youth program. Annually and bi-annually she coordinated youth retreats, which were attended by youth from all over the country who traveled to learn Religious Science principles and practices.

Fourteen years ago, in collaboration with Robin Goldsworthy, editor of the Crescenta Valley Weekly, Rev. Bev initiated the Spiritually Speaking column. The column is a Q and A format designed to provide spiritual answers to the challenges community members face. Representatives from different religious denominations respond to questions, which gives readers insight into the various religious philosophies practiced throughout the community. The Spiritually Speaking column is still active today in her honor.

Rev. Bev was well known, respected and loved in her community. She believed that her purpose was to serve people and to share her deep convictions of the Religious Science principles and her love of the teachings.

Rev. Bev is predeceased by her parents, grandparents and two sisters, Patricia Lynne Muhlbach and Carolyn Jean Erickson. Sept. 20, 1950 – Nov. 20, 2024

Pati (McArdle) Potter lived her entire life in Sunland-Tujunga as a dedicated member of the community. Pati was deeply committed to preserving and improving the neighborhood she loved so dearly.

Pati was a steadfast supporter of her community, nurturing lifelong friendships and serving for many years on the Our Lady of Lourdes and VHHS 1968 Reunion Committees. In her later years, Pati brought the same dedication and heart to the Sunland-Tujunga Elks Lodge. Her sense of connection to others and her love of community gatherings embodied her warm and caring spirit.

Pati’s most significant contributions were through her service on the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council where she held the roles of treasurer and region representative. Her true passion, however, was the Land Use Committee where she worked with unwavering dedication to ensure that new developments maintained the character, integrity and livability of the community.

Pati was truly one of a kind – an irreplaceable advocate, friend and neighbor whose warmth, tenacity and selfless spirit will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jack (aka “Punky”) and is survived by her devoted daughter Tracy Kirchner, son-in-law Dean Kirchner and brothers Chris and Joe McArdle.

Jan. 30, 1929 – Nov. 17, 2024

Samuel R. Nicholson, beloved husband, dad and gramps, passed away at home after a short illness. He was born in New Jersey to Jessie and Sam Nicholson. He married Patricia Seeber in 1954 in Darmstadt, Germany while he was finishing his U.S. Army obligation. They honeymooned throughout Europe.

Sam and Pat spent most of their 64 years of marriage raising their four children in La Crescenta. Sam attended Toll Jr. H.S. and Hoover H.S. in Glendale. He earned a track and field scholarship to the University of Southern California where he was on three national championship teams. He earned his degree in education. He was a member of Kappa fraternity. Sam loved being an educator and coach. He coached track at Hoover H.S. and was a vice principal at Clark Jr. H.S. and Glendale H.S. before becoming a principal at Rosemont Jr. H.S. and Crescenta Valley H.S. He retired from Glendale Unified School District in 1988. It seemed no matter where Sam traveled, someone would come up to him and ask, “Mr. Nicholson, is that you?” because he touched so many lives during his career and life.

As a 60-plus year member of St. James the Less Catholic Church, Sam served on many of the parish committees, as well as being a lector and member of the choir.

In 2005, Pope John Paul II honored Sam and Pat with the Benemerenti Medal for outstanding laity service to the Roman Catholic Church.

Sam attended most of the activities and games of his children and grandchildren throughout the years. He continued to attend CVHS games and meets during his retirement and loved keeping in touch with students past and present. Sam was past president of the Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club and his alter ego – Nick the Greek –entertained with his Pick a of the Week. Sam created, and he and Pat performed, the Old Time Radio Show and donated the money they raised to the CVHS student scholarship award. He was a member of the CVHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee and was inducted into it in 2022. Sam was a proud and loyal Trojan and past president of the Trojan Force, which supports the USC Track & Field Program. He was honored with the Heritage Award in 2007.

Sam loved to travel and play golf well into his 80s. He was a well-known woodworker and made thousands of Sam’s Santas, which are prized by those who display them each holiday season. He loved his many friends and family and was always ready with a song, a funny story, joke and words of wisdom and support.

Sam lost his beloved wife of 64 years, Pat, in 2018. He is lovingly survived by sons Cameron (Mary) and Bob (Lori); daughters Kathy (Gary) Strangis and Karen (Tim) Bauer; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and brother-in-law George (Jerry) Seeber.

A memorial Mass will be held on Sam’s 96th birthday on Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 4651 Dunsmore in La Crescenta.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and Scoutmaster, Bill passed away peacefully in the early morning of Dec. 31, 2024 after battling Lewy body dementia for 10 years.

Bill was the first born of three brothers to Stella and Billy J. Bell, and raised in Eagle Rock. Bill was a member of St. Dominic’s Youth Choir and later the Folk Mass Choir where in 1971 he met a girl visiting from Phoenix. They fell in love and two years later, in August 1973, he married Jo Anne. He and Jo Anne have called Sparr Heights their home since 1978.

Bill graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1969 and attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he graduated with a BS in business administration. Bill worked as a purchasing agent in various manufacturing industries including rubber, clothing, aerospace and rivets. He volunteered for 15 years as a first aid instructor with the American Red Cross and served at both St. Dominic’s and Holy Redeemer in various capacities.

As soon as they became Mr. and Mrs., they became Girl Scout leaders in Eagle Rock as Scouting was a big part of Jo Anne’s childhood. When their own children were of Scouting age, they became active in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in the Crescenta Valley.

As Scoutmaster, and then assistant Scoutmaster, Bill led the members of Troop 303 for many years. In total, he dedicated about 40 years to Scouting. Both of his own children, Andrew and Christina, earned the highest awards in Scouting. Bill also received numerous Scouting awards.

Bill enjoyed everything in the outdoors, including hiking, fishing, camping, boating and biking. We are fortunate that we have so many wonderful memories with the family, including the three grandchildren.

Larry Thomas, age 73, beloved husband, father, uncle and brother, passed away peacefully at home in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 6.

Larry was born on Christmas Day in 1951 in La Crescenta to Richard Lee & Betty Jean Thomas, both of whom were lifelong residents of this area. He also spent the majority of his life in the area until moving to Lake Tahoe and San Luis Obispo in recent years. He was a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School, class of 1970, where he also met the love of his life. Rodric Lewis Bearden Sr.

Sept. 3, 1947 – Feb. 27, 2025

Rod Bearden died quietly on the morning of Feb. 27, free of pain and surrounded by family.

The oldest of four children born to Louise and Elmo Bearden in Dallas, Texas, Rod grew up, lived and worked in Texas until his middle 40s. As a child he was particularly influenced by the love shown to him by his grandparents and the days he spent with them. Between his mother’s and grandmothers’ cooking, Rod was the beneficiary of a steady stream of scratch biscuits, the freshest of fried chicken and gravy, greens, cakes and pies, and traditional iced tea. His love of good food, iced tea and a diet soda never abated and became a source of amusement for all who knew him.

Rod (Roddy) was very athletic and sports, particularly football, occupied much of his time and he became lifelong friends with teammates and many others at W. H. Adamson High School in Oak Cliff, a suburb of Dallas. He attended Wichita State in Kansas on a football scholarship but lost it due to a knee injury and then, instead of waiting to be drafted, joined the Marines. During reconnaissance training he jumped out of one too many helicopters and again sustained knee damage that resulted in his being honorably discharged in 1967. Rod’s stint in the military enhanced and encouraged his own innate leadership and organizational skills. He would put these lessons to good use throughout his life.

An early marriage to his high school girlfriend, Sharon White, welcomed his first child – a daughter – Traci. A later marriage, to the former Patti Kesnner, brought more joy with the arrival of two sons, Beau and Kris Lee. Many trips to the lake were made with his young children in tow and their sporting events filled the calendar.

Rod’s work ethic was formed very early. From shoe shining to paper routes he contributed to his family’s finances as a young boy. As a young man cars were an interest … and also a source of income. One of his first real jobs was driving a semi truck and it was obtained by falsely stating he had driven one before. A gregarious and warm person, Rod was a natural salesman and worked in marketing and sales for many years before entering the production side of the entertainment industry as part of the transportation department. Work in Texas on shows like “Dallas” led him to more opportunities in other states. It was in Georgia while filming “In The Heat Of The Night” where he met his wife Kate. A move to California began a successful 30-year career in film and TV production in Los Angeles during which he rose easily up the ranks to transportation captain, picture car coordinator and then department head. He chose to mostly work in episodic television in order to be in town with his family, which now included daughter Caroline. One film, however – “No Country For Old Men” – did benefit from his skills and his finding and securing every vehicle seen on screen contributed visually to the Oscar-winning movie.

Rod excelled as a transportation coordinator. Newer producers often got an education in the middle of a parking lot and experienced producers left him alone. He loved a challenge and faced them all with determination, charm and a disarming southern accent. His running daily “hot costs” estimates of his budget astonished the accountants and showed his level of experience.

Retirement brought its own challenges with surgeries, COVID shutdown and chronic pain, but despite it all Rod found immense pleasure in being outdoors mowing the meadow, working to preserve the Mountain Oaks neighborhood, trotting his dog via golf cart, socializing with friends and neighbors, lounging poolside, visiting family, following sports and listening to music. Rod lived his life fully engaged, participating actively and enjoying all that he came across and he was invariably generous with his time and energy. He will always be loved and forever missed.

Rodric Lewis Bearden Sr. leaves behind three siblings: Alan, Marie and David; his wife Katherine Smurr and their daughter Caroline; his children Traci, Rod Bearden Jr. (Beau) and Kris Lee; grandchildren Jeffery, Brittany, Michael Wayne, Kristopher, Victoria and Kaylee; and great grandchildren Noah, Jayden, Rylee, Oren, Wyatt, Preston and Cooper as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22  at 11:30 a.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 808 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. Reception to follow at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, 5500 Godbey Dr. in La Cañada.

A private interment ceremony will take place at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on a later date.

Cremation services performed by Cabot and Sons of Pasadena.

Nov. 15, 1933 – Nov. 18, 2024

With heavy hearts we share the passing of Anneliese Kate Taylor who left this world on Nov. 18, 2024 just days after celebrating her 91st birthday. She passed peacefully in her beloved home in La Crescenta surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1933, Anneliese’s life was one of strength, love and unwavering spirit. In 1958, she followed her heart across the ocean to be with her soulmate Dennis Taylor with whom she shared over 50 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2012. Together they built a life full of love, laughter and deep devotion.

Anneliese was a woman of remarkable character – feisty, sharp-witted and never afraid to speak her mind. She had a presence that filled any room, a laugh that was infectious and a heart that held immeasurable love for those she cared about. Her home in La Crescenta was more than just a house; it was a place of warmth, memories and decades of cherished moments. She was a beloved figure in her community where her spirited nature and kindness left a lasting impact on those around her.

She had a deep love for animals, both wild and domestic. Her backyard was a sanctuary for hummingbirds, skunks, raccoons and stray cats, all of which she cared for with tenderness. Whether it was a familiar neighborhood critter or a beloved pet, she made sure every creature felt at home. She also had a well-known love for a good glass of wine, always ready to raise a toast to life’s moments, big or small.

She faced loss with resilience, holding the memory of her husband Dennis and her son Robb Taylor, who passed in 2013, close to her heart. She is survived by her two granddaughters: Sammantha Swinehart and Maddison Taylor; and her great-grandson Bryce Swinehart, all of whom she adored beyond measure.

Anneliese’s legacy is one of love, strength and an indomitable spirit. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten, living on in the stories, laughter and love of those she left behind.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a story, a memory or a toast in her honor – just as she would have wanted.
