 OBIT Mary Ferriil WEB

Oct. 22, 1935 – Oct. 15, 2015

Mary Ross Bryan Ferril was born in Louisville, Alabama to George Wesley Bryan and Mary Roccer Johns Bryan. Mary is survived by two younger brothers, Johns Wesley and Gregory Alan, who filled Mary’s youth with fun and adventure.

Mary was always thankful to have had the opportunity to receive a Christian education at both Culter Academy and Biola University in Los Angeles. She had no idea in the fourth grade that her classmate, William Ferril, would become her husband when they were both 19.

Bill and Mary were married on April 3, 1955 and they were blessed with three children: William Bryan, Michael James and Joanne. In 1960, Bill and Mary moved from the South Bay to La Crescenta, where they lived together for 55 years.

Mary received her Associate Arts degree from Glendale Community College. She was an elementary school teacher, a piano teacher and she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at La Crescenta First Baptist Church for many years. Mary and Bill were a very happy team; ever grateful for the wonderful families and communities in which they were raised, they made it a priority to contribute to their own and surrounding communities in a variety of ways.

Mary was endlessly loving and compassionate and in 1975 her family welcomed their daughter Joanne’s friend, Diane, into their home. Diane, her husband Sam Balisy, and their sons, Jordan and Ian, have all been a part of the Ferril family for many years.

Seven wonderful grandchildren also survive Mary: David, Billy, Hayes, Marissa, Daniel, Connor and McKenna. Treasured sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law, extended family, friends, and neighbors enriched Mary’s life and have given invaluable support to the family through the toughest of times.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at La Crescenta First Baptist Church at noon with a reception following in the church fellowship hall. The address is 4441 La Crescenta Ave.; La Crescenta. The church phone number is (818) 249-5832.

OBIT PHOTO Kyle Dubin WEB Nov. 29, 1991 - Jan. 30, 2016 Kyle James Dubin, 24, of La Crescenta passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. Kyle was born in Burbank to Bill and Susan Dubin. He grew up in La Crescenta where he attended the local schools. He loved skateboarding and paintballing. He worked as a paintball referee at Field of Fire for several years where he would come home filthy, full of welts and paint splatter – but he loved it. He also enjoyed camping and setting up his fish and plant aquariums. He attended fire science classes at Pasadena City College where he explored becoming a fire fighter. He loved adventure whether it was bungie jumping, cliff diving or hiking. He volunteered with several local organizations such as The Firehouse and CV Alliance (formerly Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition) speaking with kids and parents. He also volunteered at the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce assisting with the Hometown Country Fair and even filling sandbags with the L.A. County Fire Dept. to help prevent flooding in our local hills. He lived in Santa Barbara for a while where he met Rachel Wallis who he loved so deeply and knew she was “the one.” They shared so many good times over the past two years; it was wonderful to see how they supported each other through the challenges, how they could laugh and be goofy together and how thoughtful and respectful they were of each other. He was working at Holwick Construction learning the craft of commercial building reconstruction and Crystal Vapor where he even developed his own flavors of e-juice. He had an infectious smile and laugh along with a mischievous sense of humor. He was a sweet and caring soul that had a gift to connect with people. He was articulate and open about sharing his journey with the many lives he touched. Kyle leaves behind a small piece and spirit of himself in his son. Although Kyle was in his life for a short period of time, he was comforted to know his son is being well taken care of. He is survived by his parents Bill and Susan Dubin, sister Tricia Dubin, aunts and uncles Maureen Custer, Roy Dubin, Wendy Dubin, David Dubin, Merrie Boatright, godparents Raul and Elena Castro, and many extended family members.  He is also survived by countless childhood and fellowship friends. Although we will miss him, we will carry his smile and love in our hearts forever. There will be a celebration of the life of Kyle Dubin on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Saint Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church located at 2563 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta (on the corner of Rosemont and Foothill). There will be a memorial service from noon to 1 p.m. immediately followed by a reception from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the adjacent hall. We will be sharing our memories and laughter as we come together in love and fellowship. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in memory of Kyle to The Firehouse (through Prom Plus) http://www.promplus.org/ or The Glendale Police Foundation http://www.glendalepolicefoundation.org/testsite/GPF/Donate.html.

Bill was an extraordinary man of many talents. After serving our country in World War II, he attended and played football for UC Berkley. Bill also played in the NFL in 1947 and 1948 for the Los Angeles Dons/Rams and wore number 83. His brother, Bob Reinhard, also played for the Dons/Rams. In addition to his football prowess, he was also an accomplished diver. He won the International Diving Competition that was held in lieu of the Olympics that were cancelled due to World War II. After his playing days, he went on to teach and coach at Glendale College and ultimately became its athletic director for more than 35 years. As head coach of the Vaquero football team, he was given the nickname “The Hawk” as he seemingly missed nothing on the field. During his tenure as the athletic director, the athletic department was in need of additional funding and Bill created the Vaquero Classic Golf Tournament. More than 30 years later this tournament, known as the Glendale College Foundation Golf Classic, continues to raise money for the athletic department. In 2004 Bill was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Glendale Community College. image2 Bill will always be remembered for his exceptional love and devotion to his wife Fran, his family and to sports. He created a legacy of which his family is proud.  He will be deeply missed and cherished forever by his family and all of the students and athletes he guided throughout his life. A private memorial service will be held for immediate family members.
